Amphibians (lat. Amphibia):

Typically, amphibians have pentdactyle limbs and they are ectothermal vertebrates like reptiles with soft glandular skins. There life cycle has an aquatic larval stage which most changes to an air-breathing adult via metamorphosis. The eggs are not like the reptile eggs shelled and laid on land but some species have evolved a variety of structural and other modifications.

The amphibians are split into 3 groups:

  • Frogs and Toads (Order Salientia)*
  • Newts and Salamanders (Order Caudata)
  • Worm-like burrowing animals (Order Gymnophiona)
* This is the only order that can be found in Australia
