History

1881
Surveyor Thomas Florance sailed southwards, filling in details on Captain Cook's map.

1830
Sydney Stephen obtained a land grant at Murramarang and began farming with convict labour.

1835?
William Carr obtained a grant comprising most of what is now the Kioloa property, then bought out Stephen in 1838, consolidating the land from Kioloa to Bawley Point into a single property.

1854
Carr died and his widow sold the land to the partnership of Evans Evans and William Yates. Yates soon withdrew and Evans placed the property in charge of his sons Evan and John who ran it for many years as a large diary and beef cattle farm.

1874
A sawmill was established behind the present Kioloa store.

1881
Goodlet and Smith built a larger mill at the southern end of Kioloa beach. This had a small village and a school.

1891
Frank Guy opened a mill at Bawley Point.

1893
The timber industry was hard hit by the depression of the 1890's and the Kioloa mill was closed when its boiler burst. Sleeper cutters, tanbark gathers and gold fossickers made a meagre living in this area.

1901
John Evans died, leaving the property to his four sons. In 1906 the estate was split into four farms: Kioloa Bundle Hills, Murramarang and Wallinga.

1910
Hepburn McKenzie, a Sydney capitalist, acquired timber interests in the area, built a new mill, bought the Kioloa block from William Evans, and settled his brother-in-law on it to act as bush boss for the mill and grow fodder for the many teams needed to service the mill. The homestead and these cottages were built at that time.

1912
A telephone line was erected.

1922
McKenzie's mill was burnt down, then re-erected.

1926
The mill was again incinerated, but not rebuilt.

1929
The Kioloa block was taken over by the Moore Family who operated it as a diary farm and then as a beef cattle farm.

1975
Miss Joy London, a member of the Moor Family, presented the property to the ANU. That is why it is also called "The Edith and Joy London Foundation" (EJLF). Through the foresight and generosity of Joy London, the Foundation has become the premier research field station on the south coast. The property was given in perpetuity, for the express purpose of conducting field teaching and research.
